Rejected Boat Names

Having trouble agreeing on a boat name. Suggestions that have been rejected so far:

  • Blow Me  -  the perfect name for a sailboat IMO
  • Magnum Cockpit  -  it’s got 18’ of bench seating
  • Nice Deck - the Mahogany deck is beautiful
  • Nice wood - Sapele brightwork does look great  
  • 15’ Woody - obvious for a 15’ wooden boat
  • Morning wood - another wooden boat name
  • Knotty Bitch - there’s all kinds of knots on a wooden sailboat (speed is measured in knots, all the lines have knots, and the wood is knotty)
  • Peyronie - the mast has an unintentional curve
  • Nice Aft

Welcome! This is the story of my Glen-L 15 sailboat build.  This is a 15’ long wooden sailboat I am building at home from a set of plans I ordered from Glen-L. It will be my first sailboat so I’m looking forward to learning to sail on it. The Plans

The plans were delivered quickly and included Five sheets of detailed drawings Two sheets of full size patterns for all parts A 15 page instruction book Glen-L also published a Building Plywood Boats book that I bought.  I hung up the plans to study them before I started building with a goal of being able to picture the entire build process in my head. It took a full day of reading (and re-reading) the plans to get mostly there.  The plans have a very old fashioned feel to them, which is no surprise given their age. In fact the plans had an almost familiar feel to me. Then I remembered we had a set of Popular Mechanics books when I was a kid and one of them had an article on how to build a boat out of plywood at home. I used to pore over the pictures and instructions in that article and think how fun it would be to actually build something like that. My Other Boats

This is the fifth boat I am building, and by far my most ambitious. It is also my first time using plywood on frame construction. The other boats I built are mostly cedar strip.  They are… 16’ “Wabnaki” Prospector Canoe This is from Gil Gilpatrick’s awesome Building a Strip Canoe  book. It is the first boat I built. It is great with two people.  13’ Wee Lassie 2 pack canoe Plans from Newfound Woodworks. This has a laminated stem, stapleless construction, and more bends in the hull, which made it a little more challenging to build.  I use it with a kayak paddle.  I built this for solo paddles. It is 40 lbs (20 lbs lighter than the 16 ft).   Two 12’ Paddle Boards A Family Picture I built these paddleboards for my daughters to use, but they turned out way heavier than planned so that didn’t work out.
